What's Missing In #MeToo

I have heard a lot of backlash over the treading #MeToo over the past week. Although I am for the movement, I do see that there is a lack of representation of male victims, trans women victims, and victims of violent sexual assault.       #MeToo is a viral and overarching phenomenon that does not encompass all sexual harassment and assault cases, and I do not think it is supposed to. I think it has one job-- the job of bringing sexual assault and harassment to the forefront of popular media. I think it did that successfully. However, I can see how it can be isolating to those who are seemingly left out of the trend. For one, the movement excludes men. Not saying that sexual assault and harassment does not effect men, because it does, I think that the Me Too Movement is for girls and women and that it okay.       "One of the main goals of The Me Too Movement is to give young women, particularly young women of color from low wealth communities, a sense of empowerment that t

Ethics in Current News Coverage

In the wake of another tragedy in America, I saw many news reports of Las Vegas, some the day of the shooting, that included footage and pictures of innocent victims. This tragic event is not one I take lightly in any way, shape or form. As I was keeping everyone effected in my thoughts, I too thought of all the misuse of power the media used.       Largely, I saw two main mistakes: the media lacking ethics in what they published and showing racial privilege to the shooter.       When I heard about the shooting, I was in a hotel in Florida. Originally, there was speculation of there being multiple active shooters. Although this was proven to be false, I appreciated the updates from various news sources. However, that same night, I was given multiple pictures of the shooting. I quickly escaped from the window. I was sick to my stomach. Where is it okay for a reporter to take pictures of a deceased victim? I then researched that the people that were killed were not even identi

An intro into the life of a Journalist

‘Just a Journalist’ is intended to be a place to reflect on the current news media world we have-- an industry that is predominantly male and middle-aged. Navigating the world of journalism as a young woman is a hard road to cross. A young person is often accused of being ‘in the dark’ on major issues simply because of our age. It is assumed that we “don’t know what we’re talking about.” On top of that, the current political climate makes it hard for any journalist to be respected in society. This blog will feature current events as well as my journey with journalism as a young woman. I want to reflect on my previous years in journalism as well as my future endeavors in the field. With that being said, I would like to introduce how I became a journalism major in such a divided world. I started writing for a publication my sophomore year of high school. I wrote for multiple sections and fell in love with the simplicity of the articles. I was later the News and Opinions Editor and
